Sri Lanka has lost billions of dollars in the last two decades , thanks to the continuing fight with the militarily strong rebels, namely, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Till two years back , the Sri Lankan Government has not been able to match the LTTE militarily.
The continuing fight lead to crash in the tourism revenues of the country and also affected the infrastructure spending by the government.
But all that has changed in the last two years, with the LTTE finding it difficult to procure arms and ammunitions. That encouraged the Sri Lankan army to go on the offensive, which has resulted in total elimination of the LTTE from Sri Lankan soil. The government has officially announced victory over the LTTE after the confirmation of the death of all the key leaders, including Velupillai Prabhakaran.
LTTE has been accused of killing Rajiv Gandhi, a decade back, when he was Prime Minister of India, owing revenge for his decision to send Indian Peace Keeping force to Sri Lanka, to fight LTTE.
And LTTE had thousands of wealthy Tamil people, originating from Sri Lanka, spread across the globe. These people gave millions of dollars as financial contribution to LTTE, which it used to buy latest arms and ammunition from the global illegal arms dealers, till few years back. All that stopped in the last two years which lead to the collapse of the LTTE.
